Personal studies

Personal sketchbook sketches:

In this A5 sketchbook I mostly made studies using my favourite medium, graphite pencils. My sketchbook, being one of my favourite possessions, is where I'm able to be free of trying anything that creatively inspires me and engages my primal self to inflame the passion and to provoke my internal emotions that I translate into visual illustrations.

Short sequence of a comic idea, 2020

I've always loved the idea of making my own illustrative comic one day because I've always loved collecting and reading comics since a very young age. Most of the time, unlike a few artists, I struggled with drawing a specific type of character and not being able to re-draw it in the same way again. So here in these sketches I tried to re-draw over and over again, a made up character which is in a school atmosphere, to exercise and practice this skill which I still struggle with and continue to practice in order to get better.

Male anatomy practice, 2020

During spring I began to take interest in the male anatomy as all this time I mostly spent studying the female anatomy which was my comfort zone and all that I knew and related to myself. Although I realised that in order to grow as an artist I needed to explore further than just what I was comfortable in so therefore began to research and do more male body sketches. Soon enough, I became interested in the male anatomy as much as I was already interested in the female one.

Portraits in my preferred personal art style, graphite pencils, 2020

During the summer of 2020 was when I was mostly focused on achieving a semi-personal style in drawing portraits using references of my friends. These are only some of the ones which I created and which were my favourite. They are all surreal portraits, two with a graphical approach and two with a distortion approach.

A4 Sketchbook 2022

One of my favourite projects by far where we got to explore our everyday life and produce drawings and responses to the world around us. I really liked the concept of an on-going project and looking back at what I made since I already had been keeping a drawing diary for a very long time in my personal life.

In this specific page spread I was thinking back to my original characters I made a few weeks back and what their style of clothing would be as well as their pet (snake) and possible hair style. I also added some spur of the moment doodles here and there since I had received a new red pencil as a free bundle gift from an art shop I went to grab my new sketchbook from. The ID photo on the top right corner was from when I thought back to getting my own new photos taken during the holiday while I was renewing my passport.

In my drawing diaries I mainly like to work with my favourite mediums, pencils, markers and coloured pencils and most of my work is either anatomy or human based sketches since it’s what I’m interested in the most when it comes to illustrating. Sometimes random studies of pictures I either take myself or find on the internet do occur but I personally treat my visual diary as a safe space for myself to go to and so I tend to not strive to do anything outside of my comfort zone which is something I need to work on improving.

I think most of my pages reflect my way of thinking which can be quite scattered since I’m a very anxious person and over-thinker. Most of my drawings in this diary are unfinished.

In this page spread I was listening to some Billie Eilish songs and I came across a long winded interview she had done for a youtube page and as I was listening I got inspired to jot down what she was saying to get my mind off of what I had been thinking of which was making me slowly spiral into the overthinking I have a bad habit of doing. This relieved me a bit which is one of the reasons I love keeping a visual diary even though I try not to add too much text.

In this page spread I had bought my favourite pair of boots after a long time of waiting for them to restock and the aesthetic of them made me really want to draw them along with my favourite flowers which my mum had received from my dad on their anniversary.

I drew this spread while I was struggling to get out of my flat due to getting hit with a slight seasonal depression so I took the time on a sunny day to sit in the park and draw what was in front of me.

I also bought my very first set of markers that week and really wanted to try them out since marker is a medium I always wanted to be good at but was too scared to try. I ended up making a study of this photo I found on my pinterest feed that had a lot of bright bohemian style colours and lots going on so it was perfect and I got to use every colour I had. It was refreshing and I was surprisingly pleased with the outcome since it’s not my usual style.
