Typography

Typography and calligraphy workshop - 2022

In my second year of university I participated in a typography and calligraphy workshop where we explored how text has a big effect within our illustrations and presentation of work.

We worked as a collaborative team in my class where everyone worked on a section of a big sheet of paper. Using drawing ink and various writing materials such as: rectangular sponges, calligraphy brushes, pens and pencils to achieve various of text types.

I have always loved calligraphy and writing growing up, it was something I use to this day in and out of my art work. I believe text is a big part of what I want to add to my practice on the future. I take writing essays and stories of my own as a hobby currently however in the past two years it has slowly started to creep into my art work the more projects that I get to explore.

3D typography - 2023

I have also recently started to dab into 3D modelling of text. Even though I know quite little about 3D and blender this was definitely a fun experiment to do during my Xmas break of 2023.

My own fonts - 2024

As of right now have started to create my own fonts. My main inspiration came from a self directed project I explored at university called 'Pescheria' (Fish shop translated from italian)

During my research into this project I found various inspirations for text from boats and commercial posters I found in both in and outside of fish and boat related galleries and museums.

This drove me into exploring 'fish and boat' typography.

Inspiration from research - Fishing museum, Brighton, UK

I noticed a lot of reoccurring themes when it came to typography here. A lot of them used bold serif types and some which you would see on old rodeo signs.

I dabbled into the letterpress process during this project to give me some ideas on the fonts I wanted to create myself for the making of my final book.
